What is Earth Day, Papa?

On the way to his first T-ball game, I told my 7-year old son that it was Earth Day, and that it was great that he'd be playing on dirt and grass on this day.
'What's Earth Day?' he asked.
'Well, it's a day where we remember to take care of the earth,' I explained

'Why don't we do that EVERY day?'

'That's a very good question, son."
And a little child shall lead them.

Small kids are pretty good for stuff like that.

I remember a time about three years ago when my youngest (5 at the time) was in the car with me and we got stopped by a train at a crossing.

We were making a game out of counting the railcars going by, and several of them were loaded down with timber. Suddenly Nicholas stopped counting, and said "I hate it when they cut all the trees down. We should just build our houses out of rocks. The trees are beautiful and they shouldn't cut them down."

I practically had to pick my jaw up out of my lap, and after I did we proceeded to have a little conversation about what he'd said.

It's one of the most amazing - and totally randomly important - things I've ever heard him say.
